Biography:  

 

Bobby grew up in Alamance County and attended Southern Alamance High School.  He attended the University of North Carolina on a baseball scholarship from 1970-1974, making all Atlantic Coast Conference two years.  After receiving a BA in Physical Education and Health, he began teaching and coaching at Scotland High School in Laurinburg.  For three years he coached JV football, and varsity girls’ basketball and baseball.  In 1977, the basketball team finished 3rd in the state, while the baseball team won the state 4A baseball championship. 

 

In 1978, he went back to UNC to get his Masters Degree in Education.  He also was an assistant baseball coach that was a part of a 3rd place finish in the College World Series.  From 1978 until 1983, he taught and was an assistant baseball coach at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.  He became head baseball coach from 1983 until 1991, his teams winning the regular season championship twice, and was recognized as the 1989 Colonial Athletic Conference baseball coach of the year, and the 1990 North Carolina Baseball Coaches Association College Coach of the Year.

 

From 1991-1995, he continued teaching and coaching at Trask Middle School, Laney High School and Apex Middle School.  He now is the Senior Administrator for Athletics and Driver Education for the Wake County Public School System (26 middle schools, and 17 high schools).  During his time in this job since 1995, he has helped to:

·         Update Board Policy in regards to athletics.

·         Establish a comprehensive staff development program for athletic trainers, coaches, and athletic directors.

·         Implement a Middle School Sportsmanship Program.

·         Implement a Cheerleading Coaching Education Program.

·         Implement an officials/coaches rules sessions prior to each sport season.

·         Provide information for the Athletic website on the Wake County Schools website.

·         Provide a middle and high school athletic manual.

·         Establish a Sports Medicine Symposium for athletic trainers and coaches.

 

During his time as Senior Administrator for Athletics, he has become increasingly involved with the NCHSAA and the North Carolina Athletic Director’s Association.  He has helped the NCHSAA with the swimming, football, basketball, and volleyball state championships. He is the chairman of the Mentoring Committee for the NCADA.  He is a certified instructor for the American Sport Education Program Coaching Principles Course.

 

Bobby became a Certified Athletic Administrator (CAA) in July 1999.  He won the 2001 State Award of Merit for the North Carolina Athletic Director’s Association, and is the NCADA NFHS Citation Nominee from North Carolina for 2003.  He was named North Carolina and Southeast Regional High School Athletic Director of the Year in 2003-2004.

 

He has two daughters, Bobbi (graduate of Georgia Tech and teacher in WCPSS), and Meridith (graduate of NC State) who is now a middle school language arts teacher/cheerleading coach at Daniels Middle School in Raleigh.  Bobbi played tennis at Georgia Tech and made the all time list for women’s tennis players for the first 50 years of the ACC.  His wife of 30 years (Carolyn) is the Magnet Coordinator for Washington Elementary and Wiley Elementary.
